SMHa designed a new Athletic Facility for Coastal Carolina University and is seeking LEED Certification for the building. SMHa is working with a LEED Consultant, SystemWorCx of Columbia, SC, who reviews documents for compliance with LEED requirements, as well as reviewing LEED submittals and providing commissioning services for the building. The building, as part of a larger campus system, will be gaining LEED points for alternative transportation options. The building’s roof and site are both designed to lessen the heat island effect, and water efficient landscaping will be utilized. Water use will be reduced by the installation of low-flow showerheads. The mechanical conditioning for the building will be provided by a chilled water system consisting of an air-cooled chiller and gas-fired boilers. Control systems will be provided to regulate energy use and a measurement and verification plan will be implemented. Outdoor air will be supplied in accordance with ASHRAE guidelines. The specifications of the building require the use of regional and low-emitting materials. Lighting controls will be provided so occupants may adjust light levels to suit particular tasks. Both during construction and prior to occupancy, an indoor air quality management plan is implemented to filter air in the building of contaminants resulting from the construction process.
