The stakeholders at Coastal Carolina University chose SMHa to design a new athletic training facility that would serve as one of the crown jewels in their goal to improve their sports recruitment ability. The new Adkins Field House not only houses locker, training and weight rooms, but also special rooms for Game Day and Athletic Recruitment gatherings and a Hall of Fame. Classrooms had been planned in the design as well, but during the construction process the Owner requested these be changed into staff offices. Always responsive, SMHa was able to adapt to these significant programmatic changes and redesign the classroom area into office space. The large facility is constructed at the northern end of the small site, and is at the optimum solar orientation on the East/West axis to allow for heat-gain avoidance. This orientation also allows for natural daylighting to flow through the building. SMHa used campus standard materials in the design, and adapted them where necessary for the project to achieve the Owner’s requirement of a certified level of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED rating system. Exceeding the goal, the facility achieved a LEED Gold Certification. The project is a fine example of a healthy collaborative process between facilities staff, athletics staff and designers.
