The Science Complex Expansion for South Carolina State University is an expansion of the existing Hodge Hall and consists of a new four-story science building housing research and teaching laboratories, a greenhouse, and administrative and faculty offices. This new building will be located on a site to the southwest of the existing Hodge Hall and will be physically connected to it by a bridge at the second level.
Designed to convey a collegiate appearance, the building will have an exterior of brick with precast accents. A sloped standing seam metal roof covers the body of the building with brick ‘chimneys' utilized to accommodate the exhaust stacks for the fume hoods. Dormer louvers will be used to provide fresh air intake for the mechanical systems. The greenhouse is located on the western end of the building and nested into a portion of the third floor. This location provides safety from vandalism, greater solar exposure, and a strong relationship to the associated interior laboratories.
