AIA South Carolina Honors Carnes Barn

We are thrilled to share that AIA South Carolina has awarded Carnes Barn the Adaptive Reuse / Renovation Citation Award!

While the scale of this project was relatively small, the barn has made a big impact on the Carnes Crossroads community. Moving this old, dilapidated pole barn to a prominent location and taking care to maintain as much of the original structure and character as possible while making it safe and functional has helped write a new chapter for it, and is a testament to the importance of embracing the Goose Creek area's roots. Today it is the center of the Carnes community, and serves as a beautiful open-air venue for farmers' markets, yoga classes, weddings and more.

Many thanks to those who helped bring the 'Green Barn' back to life!

Marrington Middle School of the Arts Earns Design Award!

Congratulations to Marrington Middle School of the Arts and Berkeley County School District for being honored with their first award from the Association for Learning Environments (A4LE, formerly CEFPI)! Marrington earned a 'Merit Award for Excellence in School Building and Design' for its addition and renovation of its performing arts wing.

This project is a great result of teamwork between the client, designers and contractor: a phased, functional floor plan was developed to allow the school to operate during construction, a modern design was chosen to reflect the school's creative curriculum, and tilt-up concrete was used to help achieve the desired look while staying within budget. This is the first known K12 project in South Carolina to incorporate tilt-up concrete.

The renovation and addition will inspire generations of students, and our team was thrilled to be part of it! Many thanks to:

The Importance of Collaboration

Creativity exists in architecture for a vast number of reasons. One of those reasons is that there is no single right answer to a design problem. Some of our greatest designs are products of architects collaborating to find the best solutions for clients. This morning was an impromptu brainstorm among designers. Sometimes we set aside a few hours to plan, lunch, discuss, break away for some quiet time to sketch before coming back together as a group. Sometimes there is beer! Anything to get those creative juices flowing.

Mount Pleasant Academy's students enjoy the results of one such impromptu brainstorm every day.

The Problem: We need to raise the site. Current flood zone regulations required raising the finished floor level of the school five feet higher than the previous building.

The Solution: What about an amphiteater? Rather than bringing in new fill dirt, an amphiteater was carved into the sloping back yard of the school, providing the soil needed to raise the site and creating a stunning outdoor learning space that overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway.

Finding the best solution is not always that easy, but when great minds come together, even greater things can happen.

Buist Academy: CEFPI Best Design Award for Southeast Region!

Well, just when we thought that Buist Academy's design earning an Honor Award from the CEFPI (Council of Educational Facility Planners International) South Carolina chapter was the proverbial icing on the cake, we are excited to share that the school has received yet another recognition from CEFPI: the 'Best Design Award' for the Southeast Region!

Buist Academy was the only school from South Carolina to receive an award at the regional conference this week that included seven state chapters: Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky.

We are truly honored that this design has had such positive effects and influences on its students and faculty, the Charleston community, our state and now the Southeast region!

Thanks again to the many facets of our team who made this possible:

Charleston County School District, SMHa, Craig Gaulden Davis, ADC Engineering, Owens & Associates, S&ME, BRC Acoustics, Whitmire Ballington & Associates, SystemWorCx, Fair Consulting, Cumming Corporation, M.B. Kahn Construction, H.G. Reynolds Company.
