BERKELEY EDUCATION CENTER
Berkeley County School District
Moncks Corner, SC
‘Old Berkeley High School’ is widely recognized as the gateway to Moncks Corner’s business district and considered important to the town’s historic fabric. The existing 1929 building was unoccupied and in need of extensive restoration, including weather proofing, window replacement, brick repointing, new HVAC, electrical and plumbing, and ADA compliant entries.
First, SMHa performed a study before designing the complete services. Working with the owner, various review agencies, and community groups, SMHa designed a renovation that respects and embraces the building’s and area’s history while allowing it to serve its community.
The 17,000-square-foot renovation and 7,000-square-foot addition were completed in 2019. Berkeley County School District relocated their administrative offices to this building, and the multipurpose room is used for board and community meetings and teacher and staff training.
