PHASE ONE: NEW TOWN HALL

Phase 1 of this three-phase project involved the design and construction of a new 91,000-square-foot Town Hall completed in 2017. The goal was to provide efficient public service and transparent government with a sustainable design and respect for both the town’s history and vision for the future. In addition, it was designed and constructed as an Essential Facility. It replaced the previous Town Hall, requiring well planned programming and phasing to include fire, police, public service, executive offices, communication and administration, transportation, municipal, legal, planning, recreation, and tourism.

PHASE TWO: NEW GYMNASIUM

The new 25,000-square-foot Gymnasium, completed in 2018, contributes to Mount Pleasant’s commitment to provide citizens top-notch recreational facilities. The centerpiece is a double gym space that offers two full-size basketball courts and four volleyball courts. The second floor is a wellness center dedicated for Town employees and includes cardio/fitness space and a multipurpose room for group classes. Designed for tilt-up concrete panel construction, the gym meets the Town’s goals to complement the adjacent Town Hall; manage taxpayer dollars responsibly; and deliver a durable, sustainable facility to serve citizens for years to come.

PHASE THREE: TRACK RENOVATION

Completed in 2022, the track renovation is a joint effort between the Town of Mount Pleasant and the College of Charleston’s women’s track program. It is located adjacent to the gym so the two can share common facilities. Looking for a creative solution that met the Town’s desire to have a covered seating area and the College’s need for equipment storage, SMHa came up with a simple design using a shipping container. Not only did it meet the Clients’ desires and needs, it also provided the opportunity to integrate signage.
