CITY OF CHARLESTON POLICE FORENSICS FACILITY

West Ashley, SC

SMHa, in association with MWL Laboratory Architects, designed the new Forensic Services Building for the City of Charleston Police Department. The 22,000-square-foot two-story building, completed in 2021, is located on Bees Ferry Road in West Ashley and combines all of the Forensic Services Division’s departments under one roof.

The building includes Chemistry and Biology Laboratories, Crime Scene Investigation processing areas, a DNA Analysis Lab, Digital Evidence examination space, and administration and office space. The design reflects the technical and precise nature of Forensic Science while respecting the context of the surrounding area. This project provides a state-of-the-art facility for the Forensic Services Division and contributes to the City of Charleston’s excellence in Civic Architecture.

SMHa and our consultants worked diligently in the early planning phase to ensure the building was adequately programmed to allow for future growth, all the while respecting the City’s financial constraints. Our team closely monitored and managed cost at each design phase and delivered a Bid, with all alternates included, approximately 6% below the City’s maximum construction budget.

Interior Design & Architecture was also completed by SMHa.
