Located prominently on the corner of Calhoun and Elizabeth Streets in Downtown Charleston’s Historic District, this site presented several challenges: A quarter-acre site with limited space, limited access, and aging infrastructure that abuts both commercial and residential areas.
Completed in 2017, this 17,000-square-foot building’s craftsmanship, detailing, and monumental staircase help create a nice pedestrian experience and anchor the urban corner while serving as a main entry and backdrop to The Charleston Gaillard Center’s park.
SMHa worked diligently with the owner and community groups to create a design that would accommodate the owner’s needs on the small site and in an appropriate scale that the neighborhood supported. The three-story design consists of parking and a walk-in lobby at the ground level with offices on the second and third floors.
